A loan of R2,000 was given in 1984 to Zaid who never repaid it. Now, in 2016 Zaid wants to pay his debt. How much should he pay?
Answer
Relative to 1984, R2000 currently has very little value. The debtor should now repay his creditor in terms of the value of gold. In 1984, the value of a krugerrand was R510 (five hundred and ten rands). He has to now give his creditor four krugerrands. The total value of four krugerrands in 1984 was R2040. On paying back the loan with 4 krugerrands, he has to refund the creditor with the amount of gold which R40 could buy in 1984. The then price of one tenth krugerrand was R55. A slight adjustment will have to be made. But basically, he has to pay back with four krugerrands.
