Question
Are methylated spirits and paint thinners permissible? These substances contain considerable alcohol?
Answer
Methylated spirits is a type of alcohol. Paint thinners is a substance which also contains much alcohol. These substances may be used externally, not on the body unless it is absolutely necessary, e.g. alcoholic substances used medically to numb the body when operating. According to Shaikhain (Rahmatullah alayhima) these substances are not najis although the Fatwa of the Mathhab is on Imaam Muhammad's view. Nevertheless, due to massive Ibtilaa-e-Aam (extensive and intensive involvement) our Akaabir have ruled that for external use, when necessary, these substances may be used. They remain haraam for consumption, even in minute quantities such as to be found in coke and soft drinks in general.
