Question
The Mehr of my wife was 2 Krugerrands. Although I was supposed to pay the Mehr cash, I have hitherto after two years not paid it yet. My wife demands payment. I have a cash amount of R130,000. May I deduct the Mehr amount from this amount and pay Zakaat on the balance only or do I have to pay Zakaat on the whole amount of R130,000?
Answer
Deduct the value of 2 Krugerrands and pay Zakaat on the balance.
