What is the meaning of giving Dumm?

Giving Dum means to sacrifice a sheep or goat as an expiation for committing a violation during Hajj or Umrah. The animal must be sacrificed within the boundaries of the Haram and a monetary substitute cannot be made. A Dumm does not have to be sacrificed immediately. Upon return to one's home the money can be sent to a reliable person who would be able to discharge the obligation of the Dumm. However unnecessary delay in sacrificing the Dumm is sinful.
