Is it permissible to remove a life-supporting machine from a patient?

Question

Is it permissible to remove a life-supporting machine from a patient?

Answer

If on removal of the machine the patient gasps for breath, then it will not be permissible to unplug it. It will then be tantamount to murder. However, if there is no reaction by the patient on switching off the machine, then it is permissible to remove it.
