The analogy is fallacious and not permissible.

Ikhlaas is a condition of the heart. No one can claim with certitude that a person is acting with Ikhlaas or not. Only Allah Ta'ala knows. Nevertheless, we form conclusions based on outward signs, and that too for guiding Muslims. In most cases, in fact in almost all cases, when an institution splits into two factions, the intention is not sincere. They are motivated by the dunya and nafs. Money and power are the fundamental factors which lead to the split.

As far as the Sahaabah are concerned, we draw the line at that juncture, and we do not drag them into our kinds of splits and factionalism. The Sahaabah must be totally left out of the equation. We have no right to probe their reasons and intentions. Our belief is that all the Sahaabah were sincere regardless of their infighting. We are not allowed to sit in judgment over the Sahaabah. It is a dangerous terrain for our Imaan.

The evidence underlying splits in the Tabligh Jamaat and Darul Ulooms confirm that the cause for the ugly factionalism is the hubb-emaal and hubb-e-dunya.
