Question
A man has a voluntary pension fund. He as well as his employer contribute monthly to the fund. The man has no access to the funds currently. Is Zakaat incumbent on the amount in the fund?
Answer
Zakaat is Waajib on the amount he has contributed regardless of him having no immediate access to the money. Zakaat is not currently incumbent on the amount his employer has contributed. Furthermore, if the money is being invested in some interest generating business, as is usually the case, then the interest amount must be given to the poor when the policy matures and he receives the money.
