Question
I had purchased Sasol shares for R3,000. Today the value is over R60,000. What is the Shariah‟s status of these shares? Can I use the gain for myself? If the gain is haraam, can I use it to pay Sars?
Answer
The entire gain of the Sasol shares is riba and haraam. The money you had invested in the company is just like buying a gambling ticket. The money thus invested is lost. The initial investment of R3000 is lost. The initial R3,000 was the price for the haraam gambling/riba ticket. Use all the money to pay SARS, rates and taxes. Do not use even one rand for yourself.
