Question

Is there a basis in the Shariah to make it compulsory for a man to get consent from a Cabinet Minister of a non-Muslim government, or a non-Muslim court and from the husband's first wife to marry a second wife?

Answer

There is absolutely no basis in the Shariah for a man to acquire the consent of any one of these entities if he wishes to marry a second or a third or a fourth wife. It is a man's inherent Islamic right to marry a second wife. In terms of the Shariah he does not require the consent of even any Muslim authority in a Muslim country governed by the Shariah.

The stipulation of any such consent will be an unlawful accretion and interference with the Law of the Shariah.
