In the Gujerati community several households will come together and from each household a sum of money, whatever they can easily give every month, will be given and the total amount will be given to one of the households. The next month another household will receive the net amount which every household gives, and so forth. Is this type of deal Shariah permissible? This is done to make it easy for a household to purchase expensive items such as large appliances and furniture or vehicles etc..
Answer
If any household makes a contribution with the condition or understanding that their turn will also come to receive a contribution, then the project is not permissible. It will be riba and maisar (gambling). It is haraam.
