My husband has divorced me. My Mahr and other jewellery is in the custody of my mother-in-law who now refuses to give it to me.

Question

My husband has divorced me. My Mahr and other jewellery is in the custody of my mother-in-law who now refuses to give it to me. Does she have the right to deny me my possessions?

Answer

Your ex-mother-in-law is a rogue. Her usurpation of your jewellery is haraam. Some seniors at your end should explain to her and to your ex-husband the villainy of their usurpation. This kind of usurpation is committed by many in-laws when divorce takes place. It is best to entrust one's gold jewellery to one's own family. It should not be left at the in-laws.
