As a daughter-in-law I am expected to serve the friends and relatives of my in-laws when they visit our home.

Question

As a daughter-in-law I am expected to serve the friends and relatives of my in-laws when they visit our home. However, these are mixed gatherings of men and women. No purdah whatsoever is observed. They all sit and eat and converse together. I absent myself when they come and sit in my room. My in-laws deem this highly disrespectful and insist that I be present. What am I supposed to do?

Answer

It is not at all permissible to serve the mixed gathering of family guests / relatives / friends. It is haraam. Your obligation is to obey the commands and teaching of Allah's Deen and to seek His Pleasure, not the pleasure of the family when it is in conflict with the Shariah. Even if they regard it as being 'rude' for not serving them or participating in the gathering, ignore their criticism and separate yourself in your room.
